We’re very excited about a new collaboration in the context of our Art for Care project.
Abimbola Odiase is a biomedical engineer from Lagos, Nigeria, who, through her work in hospitals and as a patient with sickle cell disease, realised the need to improve hospital wards.
Her recent call on LinkedIn to draw attention to this need stated:
Studies consistently show that hospital design and ward conditions impact: Infection rates, length of hospital stay, patient stress levels, staff burnout and overall patient satisfaction
The environment patients recover in matters more than we admit.
I’ve worked in hospital wards and I’ve been admitted in them. I’ve seen how:
• Poor lighting drains morale
• Damaged walls affect hygiene
• Overcrowded layouts increase stress
• Neglected spaces silently reduce dignity
This prompted me to get in touch with her, which led to establishing a collaboration to create environments that support recovery. Our goal is to renovate one pilot ward in a hospital in Lagos and develop a replicable model that can be scaled across other healthcare facilities. For this, we’ll build on our lived experiences and backgrounds in biomedical engineering and curating.
In addition to this, Bolaji Alonge will collaborate on the artistic side of the project.
